Olive Oil: A Golden Elixir for Brain Health
Olive oil, a staple in Mediterranean cuisine, has been celebrated for centuries for its culinary prowess and health benefits. But did you know that this golden liquid is also a powerful ally for your brain? Emerging research is uncovering the remarkable ways in which olive oil can support cognitive function, protect against neurodegenerative diseases, and enhance overall brain health.
Please note that these are all new findings and research and there is definitely more to be revealed however, interesting that those in my family who regularly used Olive oil, were very bright and attentive all-the-way through end-of-life. Also for those who take their nutrition seriously, it is good to know that olive oil is a good ingredient to have on your list! I know quite a few in the Mediterranean area who swear to minced garlic and olive oil on toast with their morning meal. Here are some things that have been said about olive oil and its good brain health properties.
The Brain-Boosting Power of Olive Oil
Olive oil has been around for centuries, rich in Antioxidants such as vitamin E and polyphenols, which combat harmful free radicals. Free radicals can cause cell damage and are a cause of illness and aging. Anti0xidants clean up, they simply won’t dance with free radicals! Free radicals are ever present in the environment around us, in our foods, etc. Antioxidant compounds help reduce oxidative stress, a major contributor to age-related cognitive decline. Enters Olive oil…
In our quest to attain an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, using Olive oil in our dietary regimen in addition to attaining Life Balance through the 8 dimensions of Holistic Health is optimum self-care as both help fight inflammation. Studies show inflammation is linked to various brain disorders (among other chronic diseases) and olive oil is something one can add to one’s diet that possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm inflammation and promote optimal communication with nerve cells and their synapses; in the long run, promoting optimal cognitive function. Let’s not forget that other components of Olive oil which include oleic acid and hydroxytyrosol, these two have been shown to protect brain cells and even help improve memory and learning abilities. And let’s not forget heart health which is essential for everything “living,” Olive oil’s ability to support heart health by helping reduce bad cholesterol and lowering blood pressure indirectly benefits the brain and a healthy longevity.
Incorporating Olive Oil into Your Diet
To reap the brain-boosting benefits of olive oil, consider the following: 1) Choose Extra Virgin Olive Oil which retains the highest concentration of antioxidants and beneficial compounds, and ensure that all Extra Virgin Olive Oil denotes “Cold Pressed” (this is the standard) which retains the highest concentration of antioxidants and beneficial compounds, 2) Drizzle it on salads to add a flavorful touch to your salads, 3) if your favorite dishes require a sauté, make sure you use olive oil, 4) The Mediterranean Diet, incorporate olive oil into a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein for maximum brain benefits.
Mediterranean diet is olive oil and extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), which is high in phenolic compounds. EVOO and other olive-related phenolic compounds have been shown to reduce the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD. 1
What’s the take?
While more research is needed to fully understand the complex relationship between olive oil and brain health, the available evidence is promising. By incorporating this golden elixir into your diet, you can take a proactive step towards supporting your brain’s well-being and potentially reducing your risk of age-related cognitive decline. It just takes consuming more than half a tablespoon a day! Remember, a healthy diet is just one piece of the puzzle for optimal brain health. Combine it with regular physical activity, mental stimulation, and adequate sleep for a holistic approach. Olive Oil: A Golden Elixir for Brain Health!
According to Healthline 2 olive oil is not only loaded with antioxidants and has inherent anti-inflammatory properties but its key benefit in my book is that olive oil’s predominant fatty acid content is oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat that makes up 71% of the total oil content (around 13.8% being saturated and 10.5% of polyunsaturated fat such as omega 6 and omega 3). Studies show that oleic acid reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, also monounsaturated fats are also quite resistant to high heat, making extra virgin olive oil a healthy choice for cooking.
